Our Comprehensive Buying Guide
Finding a good food for lovebirds is a lot more difficult than one would imagine, what with the seemingly endless options available. Knowing what bag to choose can be tricky, and unless you do your fair share of research, you risk making a choice that will not satisfy your pet’s nutritional requirements.
To make things more accessible to you, and because we understand that not everyone has the kind of time on their hands to do research, we have done the homework for you. If you want to learn more, all you have to do is take a quick look at our straight-to-the-point buyer’s guide below.
Get food that is balanced
To ensure that your lovebird will get all the nutrients needed, you will have to try and emulate the kind of diet he or she might get in the wild. Among these foods, you will find seeds, grasses, nuts, flowers, fruits, insects, and the list goes on and on. Every season also brings new types of food.
With such diversity, you would imagine that providing the same balanced nutrition at home would difficult and expensive, yet that is not the case at all. You can now find many affordable brands that offer diverse and balanced blends full of the many fruits and vegetables a bird needs to prosper.
You need to focus on the “base diet” which is the primary item that you feed your pet on a daily basis. Everything else that you feed as an addition to this should be considered a snack. Try and focus on a base diet that is nutritionally sound and diverse enough so that your birdie does not get tired of it quickly.
Seeds or pellets?
If you’ve started to prospect the market, this is a dilemma that you are most likely familiar with already. Many owners can become quite confused about what type of food they should feed their pets. The first thing we feel the need to mention is that both options are nutritious, and one is by no means superior to the other.
The best thing you can do in this case is to alternate between the two. An all seed diet is high in fat, and high doses can affect the health of the bird. Still, even if you go for a base diet focused on seeds, pellets or both, it is just as important never to forget to offer your lovebird fresh fruits, veggies, and greens on a daily basis.
Snacks are important
If you want to keep your feathered companion well-nourished, a daily snack is a cheap and easy way to keep him or her healthy and full of energy. The fruits that you can try include apple, banana, berries, orange, melon, and pineapple.
For vegetables, you have an even bigger list to choose from. You can safely use asparagus, broccoli, beans (but only cooked), carrots, celery, leafy greens, peppers, soybeans, sprouts, yarns, and squash. You can try one of these fresh foods and see what your bird likes the best.

Hello Karen.
In no way am I looking to contradict what your vet said, but I find it a little odd that she said that peppers can affect the liver. Perhaps hot peppers are a no-go, yes, but I don’t see why bell peppers would be dangerous. Of course, they could affect the liver if they are dirty and covered in bacteria or if they’ve been sprayed with pesticides. Pretty much any type of vegetable you get at the grocery store is covered in pesticides, so I would recommend getting them from your local farmer’s market. Also, you should never feed your pet bird any kind of vegetable with seeds – the ‘meat’ from the bell peppers would be fine, for example, but the seeds are not.
As for your question regarding the cooked veggies – well, the truth is that cooking them removes the pesticides; they get into the water. You can feed your pet bird a mix of fresh veggies (organic) and leafy greens (spinach, for example, is safe) and cooked veggies. You can also get rid of the pesticides by leaving the veggies to soak in grapefruit juice, and you can also try to wash them thoroughly but my opinion is that just by washing them, you aren’t going to be able to remove the chemicals, at least not 100%.
Hope this helps.
