They say a dog is a man’s best friend but, in fact, these creatures are more than that. Once they are welcomed into a new family, they immediately become members with full rights and, if you look after them properly, you’ll get not only love but also unconditional devotion.
And huskies are no exception because they are very tender pets and are perfect around children. However, if you want to make sure your husky dog lives at its fullest, you might want to consider these tips about finding the most appropriate dog food for huskies.
The best diet for your pet
In general, huskies eat the same type of food as other dog breeds. You can choose raw food, commercial food (either dry or wet food) or a combination of these two. We do suggest opting for a balanced diet that includes a little bit of everything just to make sure your husky gets all necessary nutrients and vitamins for an active life.
However, it is important not to feed your dog a combination of these two types of food at the same time because they are digested differently and your husky may have problems. Although commercial food is more convenient to buy, serve, and store, it doesn’t fulfill all your husky’s diet requirements, so you should opt for an additional raw source of animal proteins (chicken, lamb, beef or even fish).
Fresh fruits and vegetables are also great for a balanced and delicious diet but you should avoid grapes, raisins, prunes, cooked bones, onions or dairy products in large amounts.
When and how to feed
Although huskies are large dog breeds, this doesn’t mean they require large amounts of food as well. On the contrary, Siberian Huskies are used to harsh winters and being active all day long, so they store fats and food differently than other dog breeds.
They are used to the scarce food and this is why they tend to easily get overweight if they are fed too much food. However, unlike other breeds, Huskies will only eat until they are full, so overfeeding rarely occurs.
And since they are active dogs, the eating routine should be as strict as possible. Make sure your dog never starts exercising with a full stomach as this could lead to digestive and health problems.
As a general rule, you should feed your husky two hours before starting the training session and wait at least 30 minutes after the training until feeding it again.
Food diversity
Lastly, a diverse diet is required as most huskies tend to easily get bored of eating the same type of food all day long. But, instead of completely changing the diet every now and then, you could use some tricks like adding a bit of cheese on top of the food or seasoning it with spices.
Combining tastes is also a great way to feed your dog the same type of food without it getting boring. Just sneak in some fresh or dry fruits and you’ll completely make the meal more delicious.
